Tarmacadam (or tar-mac) is a mixture of tar and broken stone. It is laid, brushed evenly and compressed by a large machine (usually a steam roller) to create the desired shape.

Tarmacadam is one of the most popular choices of surface for driveways as it is durable and easy to lay on the right preparation. It can also be repaired easily when stained or damaged. However it is not suitable for anyone who enjoys fixing their car or motorbike, as the material is an oil based product and spillages of certain fluids may dissolve the binder.

When laid correctly, tarmacadam should last for a long time, dependent on the depth of the foundations and the level of maintenance.
